Mídia, poder e controle social
Palavras-chave
This paper analyses the media as an instance of power, operating as an element of social control in contemporary capitalist societies. To do so, we issue three specific topics concerning the display of such media-based social control: journalism, taken as a major reality-definer discourse – far from being a mere neutral and objective technique –; advertisements and the discourse regarding the female body, both producers of social models, proponents of a disciplinary conduct. The former addresses the society as a whole, whilst the latter reinforces idealizations regarding gender relations. The debate includes the works of Foucault, Marx and Gramsci, establishing links between them on the major concern of a critical commitment on Social Sciences. In this paper, the perspective towards power is connected to a total system, that includes relation with and beyond the State, showing themselves up sometimes as easily recognisable, although some other times being displayed in a less apparent way, in everyday life.
