Se Maomé não vai à montanha...: charge e crítica social no limiar do século XXI

The present article discusses the role of graphic producers as cultural mediators, with special emphasis on the work of illustrators and cartoonists. We analyze the contribution of graphic productions to the constitution of a new visual culture in the 21st. century, considering the social use of humor in nowadays society. We focus our attention on the “Mohammed cartons”, published in European newspapers in 2005, to make considerations concerning the use of cartoons as a primary research source for historians. We conclude that cartoons – as other representations, such as photography, for example – not only illustrate a certain episode, but can furthermore be an active part of social events, able to engender multiple and unexpected results.
