In Chico Rei, a film directed by Walter Lima Jr., and produced during a period of critical changes (1979-1986), a historical allegory is used to present a political portrait of the Brazilian blacks. We will discuss here how important is the film, as the director theoretical and aesthetic choices renew the myth as projection and identification of desires and realities, analyze the abstract notion of Brazilian people, and depict the fight for freedom as a permanent active resistance.
