A construção de narrativas de idolatria no futebol brasileiro
Palavras-chave
This article presents partial results of the Project "Media, Idolatry and Popular Culture in Brazil", granted by CNPq. It analyses two biographies of idols of Brazilian soccer: Zico and Romário. The article concludes that Zico’s biography emphasizes success throughout discipline and work, configuring the pattern of the classic hero. The opposite pattern predominates in the construction of idolatry in the "official" narratives in Brazil. Here we have very often an "essencialized" ideal of "irreverent" and "undisciplined" human beings. However, the analysis of Romário’s biography, mostly based on the press coverage about his performance during the victory of 1994 Soccer World Cup, shows that the media’s narrative emphasizes qualities related to "irreverence" and "roguery", constructing a singular character of our culture. The narratives of the trajectory of both athletes concern about antagonist hero patterns of Brazilian culture and show us that the "construction" of their biographies is part of a dialectical relation between the acts of the "mythical objects" - Zico and Romário - and the social context.
