Gatsby, Dior e a produção do luxo na moda no século XX

The scale and speed of social changes in the XX century promote changes in lifestyles that reverberate in consumption practices. The consumption of luxury also transforms itself, especially in light of world wars, and this will be discussed here using two frames: the character Jay Gatsby, F. S. Fitzgerald’s novel (1925), and the designer Christian Dior, famous for creating the New Look in 1947 and transform the meaning of luxury in fashion. As they constitute themselves as socio-cultural markers so central in their time and places for production and consumption of goods, both can also shed light on what is suppressed and what is expanded in luxury consumption during the interwar period and immediately afterward.
