Resumo Desde suas origens, o amor se firmou como elemento essencial das fórmulas melodramáticas que ajudaram a formatar a atividade cinematográfica para o grande público. Identificando seus momentos de emergência e impasse, o artigo examina exemplos de dois ciclos nesta trajetória. Um homem e uma mulher e 9 e ½ semanas de amor ilustram o primeiro: o da subsunção do romantismo à estética da mercadoria. Sexo, mentiras e videoteipe e Closer, o segundo: o da mediação e análise do intimismo desde um ponto de vista terapêutico.

Abstract Love and the film: consumer romanticism and intimate reflexivity Since their origins, love has become an essential factor among the melodramatic formulas that helped to define the cinematographic activity in its mainstream. Considering its moments of emergency and impasse, this article examines some examples of two phases in this trajectory. Um homem e uma mulher and 9 e ½ semanas de amor figure the first one, in which romanticism is subsumed to the commodity aesthetics. Sexo, mentiras e videoteipe and Closer figure the second, in which therapeutic rationality is called up to mediate or even to analyze intimate relationships.
