Filmes domésticos e os fios da identidade. Observações sobre o cinema de Alan Berliner

The article goes through the work of US documentarist Alan Berliner, who is the author of four feature films covering one single theme: identity. Berliner plunges into private life in order to surface the social imaginary of the US middle class. Accordingly, he assembles his documentaries from pre-existent materials. Family footages shot by his father or by unknown people are his main raw material. He uses collage – a resource issued from painting techniques - in order to put together forgotten materials, thus making films by using the so-called found footage technique. By recycling domestic footages Berliner opens a new path to contemporary experimental documentary techniques – a sort of a cinematic essay, close to audiovisual and the plastic arts. Keywords
